Action Shooting Retreat

Guidance Steel Target Shooting is excited to present a new series of multi-day action shooting retreats for Guidance Shooting Club members and invited guests held in the foothills of Yosemite on a private 120 acre ranch! These retreat will include all firearms and ammo required for each session, meals and snacks each day, a bunk house for sleeping or a tent site for those who prefer to camp, and a visit to a private Wild West action shooting range! Each session will be taught by Reilly Bodycomb.

There is no skill requirement for these retreats, however all students must be legally allowed to possess a firearm in the USA. All ammunition and firearms are provided. If you have any questions about the retreat, please email for more information.

This is a crucial training session where participants will learn the fundamentals of marksmanship and firearms safety. We will then practice, grip, sight picture, trigger pull, drawing from a holster, speed reloading, and safely moving between shooting positions, all while using unloaded firearms.

Retreat guests will first review the principles of marksmanship and firearms safety. After that we will take a deep dive on the effective use of lever-action rifles. Attendees will then get to shoot a Henry Golden Boy, or their own personal lever rifle. They will also get the opportunity to handle a Winchester model 1873 and a Marlin model 1895.

After being introduced to the basics of ballistic physics and long-range marksmanship, students will learn the functionality of a Savage MKII bolt action rifle fitted with G.I. style aperture sights. With this new found knowledge, the guests will get to go on a beautiful hike throughout the property where small targets have been placed at various distances and angles providing a fun introduction to precision shooting.

In this session guests will learn everything from basic handling to speed reloads and fast transitions with a Browning 1911-22. Guidance Club Members will also get the opportunity to shoot an antique US Army issued Colt 1911 produced in 1917!

Participants will have the rare opportunity to work with an antique Winchester 1897 shotgun made in 1908! We will use this gun to hit both falling steel and aerial clay targets! Students may also use their own pump shotguns for this portion of the camp or side by side shotguns.

In our final shooting session, students will get to test their skills in a timed action stage that requires use of three types of firearms used in the previous sessions. This stage will include multiple reloads, as well as engaging moving targets.

Frequently Asked Questions

May I attend these camp?
If you have previously attended a Guidance shooting lesson, a Double Tap Camp, are accompanying an alumni, or have been invited personally, you may register. If you are completely new to Guidance Steel Target Shooting, please check out our Private Lesson section to get involved!

Do I need any competitive shooting experience?
Not at all! This camp is well suited to new shooters and those just getting started in the hobby.

Do I need any camping equipment?
Not if you do not want to camp outside. However, basic toiletries, a towel, flip flops, and a water bottle are recommended. The guest bunkhouse is a step above camping, but the nights can still be cold in certain parts of the year, so long underwear is a good idea just in case.

Do I need to bring any Food?
Not unless you want extra snacks. All meals are provided, as well as coffee and tea in the mornings. If you have any special dietary requirements, please let us know BEFORE the start of the retreat so we can prepare the right meals for you.

Do I need any shooting equipment?
Not at all! Students will be provided with all the training equipment and ammo needed for each shooting session. Pants with belt loops are required, as well as close toed shoes. If you wish to bring your own guns to the retreat, please contact us beforehand to be sure they meet the requirements needed for the training.

What is the closest airport?
Fly into Fresno (FAT) Friday and land before 4pm and we will pick you up and take you straight to the ranch! Fly out Monday morning if you don't want to miss the final session and dinner on Sunday evening. Be sure to give us your flight information in advance.

Be sure to closely follow the TSA laws on flying with a firearm as seen HERE. Furthermore, be sure your handgun follows California laws. Check HERE for details.
